The path to car-freedom lies open to all of us. All we have to do is to take the road less travelled, and put one foot in front of the other. Before you are ready to start on this journey, say these words that will surely be of inspiration and help to you.

The 12 Admissions of Autoholics Anonymous

  1. I admit that I am a victim of the transport industry, seduced by speed, status, and sense of power – that I have become an isolated and passive consumer of distances whose shape and length I can no longer control. I admit that I am not free but enslaved and powerless in this situation.
  2. I have come to believe that Human Power and Access By Proximity can restore a balance in myself and between the human and the natural environment.
  3. I have made a decision to build up my will to create personal and social change, and to transform my life.
  4. I have made a searching and fearless inventory of the impacts of my car addiction.
  5. I have admitted to myself, and to another human being, the exact nature of my wrongs and the wrongs committed in the name of motorists or on behalf of the automobile-petroleum-motorway system.
  6. I am entirely ready to overcome all the obstacles – laziness or sedentary lifestyle, lack of equipment or infrastructure, lack of supportive friends or family, low-density development, misguided zoning laws or planning policies, unenlightened officials, industrial might, etc. – that stand in the way of personal and social change.
  7. I will humbly ask Those In Power to remove any remaining obstacles, and when and where this may fail, I will take personal and community action to remove them (the obstacles as well as Those In Power).
  8. I have made a list of all persons and beings past, present and future whom I have harmed with my driving, and am willing to make amends to them all.
  9. I have made direct amends to such people and beings wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. I will continue to take inventory of my ongoing progress and impacts, and when my behaviour may cause unnecessary damage to others or the environment, I will promptly admit so and take action to mitigate it.
  11. I have sought through spontaneous and convivial interaction to improve my contact with Neighbours and Community Members, and to reclaim where possible the public space lost to the rush of traffic.
  12. Having had a personal awakening as the result of these steps, I will endeavour to carry this message to other autoholics, to practice these principles in all my affairs and to implement the 12-step programme in my daily life.
